The rifle shown on this page is a Swedish M1896/38 rifle manufactured in Germany at Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf A/N in 1899. This rifle started life as a standard Swedish M1896 long rifle and was converted to a short rifle configuration sometime during 1938 or shortly thereafter. It is chambered for the Swedish 6.5X55mm caliber cartridge. The bore on this rifle is great with strong lands and grooves. It sports a rotary elevation site for fine adjustment from 250-600 meters. These rotary adjustment sights where added because of the upgrade to a spitzer style cartridge and also so they could use the existing ladder site of the M96 and just use an insert with the rotary dial. The rifle shown has seen plenty of use but is still in great working order. It retains approx. 70 percent of the original metal finish. The only thing I have done to this rifle since receiving it was to thin out the nasty and dirty top finish on the stock with acetone and mineral spirits. Then hand rubbed approx. 10-12 coats of BLO into the wood. Then finished off with a layer of wood wax. This rifle still retains the original or like original sling. All serial numbers match except the lower barrel band. Unfortunately this rifle does have an importer stamp on bottom of barrel.
