The rifle shown in the photos below is my Gew 88. This rifle was manufactured in Germany at the Danzig arsenal in 1890. This rifle was used by Germany for a number of years then sold to Turkey. It as been upgraded to the 88/05 configuration which consisted of the chamber being opened up to except the new 7.9 X 57 spitzer-type bullet, the opening in the bottom of the magazine closed, guides for use with standard mauser charger clips installed, and a spring loaded magazine follower added. This particular rifle was updated by the Turks by having a Turkish style rear sight added with Arabic numbers. I believe the bolt was also replaced by the Turks at some point because it has the Turkish symbol and Arabic serial number. The bore on this rifle is excellent. This was a really big surprise because of all the corrosive ammo that was used when this rifle was in use. It is shiny and smooth with no signs of pitting or corrosion. The lands and grooves are very pronounced and free of bad spots. The action is very tight. The wood still retains the cartouches. The metal is very good for a rifle of this age. Thanks for looking.
